WC2014 day 19 – The morning after

Saw an interesting comment on twitter last night but can’t remember by who that basically said so many of the European teams look like they are just doing a job and the other countries are playing with pride and passion. Probably a bit unfair that but I do think the smaller nations, like Algeria, will have an advantage in that they will have played together a lot more times just because there is a smaller group of players and they won’t have their clubs trying to get them out of matches. When England play friendlies they’ll change a load of players with substitutions and a fair few will miss out and it means far less minutes for players to play together. Would be interesting to know how many minutes Johnson, Jagielka, Cahill and Baines had played together prior to the World Cup and compare that to the Algerian back four.

3 of the 6 knockout matches so far have gone to extra time and a couple of others were very close.
